Chocolate flint

2021 research season

During the research season of 2021, archeological excavations were carried out from June 7 to August 25, 2021.

The research was led by PhD Magdalena Sudoł-Procyk from the Institute of Archeology of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. In works participated archeologists from the Intitute of Archeology UMK: MA Magdalena Malak, MA Martyna Wiejacka, MA Jan Wiejacki as well as students and graduates of archeology from Toruń. The site was also visited within consultation by: Professor Jacek Lech, PhD Maciej T. Krajcarz (Institute of  Geological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences PAN in Warsaw) and PhD Dagmara H. Werra (Independent Laboratory of Prehistoric Flint Mining of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences PAN in Warsaw). Moreover, preliminary GPR research has been carried out on the archeological site by MA Tomasz Herbich (Laboratory of Bio- and Archeometry of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences PAN in Warsaw).

In the 2021 season, the exploration of the mine shaft continued, widening the excavation towards South and East, in order to achieve a complete outline and better documentation of the facility.

Subsequent layers forming the shaft fill containing archeological material were documented. Due to unstable sediment, the works were completed at the level of fine limestone rubble. They will continue after prior strenghtening the walls of excavation.

The excavation number IV, in which during the research season of 2019  team managed to reach two layers of chocolate flint in weathered limestone, has also been unveiled. The samples of raw chocolate material were taken for detailed geological research.

During season of 2021, about 20m2 were dug up, aquiring almost 10 thousand flint artifacts. The research confirmed preliminary observations from previous seasons, concernibg the usage of flint raw material from different levels of deposition. According to current state of research in the shaft fill artifacts of flint derived from weathered clay predominate. Products made of excellent quality shallow chocolate flint, derived from weathered rock, are found mainly in the redeposited loess layer lying above the ceiling of the explored shaft.
